Boise has made another important list. In recent months, we've seen the City of Trees being named one of the best places to retire and one of the best places in America to move to. The real estate site, Movoto, has named Boise one of the top 10 safest places to live in America.
How Movoto Got Its NumbersMovoto didn't just come up with this information about Boise. It compared Boise's crime stats with other highly populated cities in the US. (Movoto took the stats about the cities from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report.) The types of crime that the FBI report measures are the number of incidences for crimes like murder, rape, theft and assault. From that list, Movoto went on to make divisions between these four categories of crime:
How Boise Compares
It then looked at the number of incidences of violent crime in a city per 100K people. What this did was account for cities that had a higher number of crimes, because it was a more populous city. The per 100K relied, then, on the percentage of overall crimes instead of the total number. Additionally, the numbers were weighted to give balance to the final totals.Boise ranked #8 on the list of one of the safest places in America to live. Irvine, California nabbed the top spot. All the cities that made the list are located in the Western part of the US. Of the nearly 3,000 crimes reported in Boise, 267 were violent, but none of them were murder. Fremont, California, Gilbert, Arizona, Plano, Texas and Henderson, Nevada round out the top five. This means that people living in the City of Trees have just a one in thirty-six chance of being a victim of a violent crime. This average is 3x better than those of Atlanta or Detroit. Detroit was actually ranked on Movoto's list as one of the most dangerous populous cities in America as did Atlanta. Both of those cities landed in the bottom 10 of the list of 100 cities that Movoto measured.
